In a landmark move for Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, Brookfield Asset Management, a global investment powerhouse, has entered into a Joint Investment Framework Agreement with homegrown clean energy player Solarvest Holdings Bhd.
The partnership will see both parties develop, construct, and operate at least 1.5 GW of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects across Malaysia.
Among the projects that will be undertaking are:
- Hybrid solar photovoltaic power plant and battery energy storage system (BESS),
- Solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, or
- Standalone BESS
- Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS),
- Large Scale Solar Program (LSS),
- Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) program, and
- Self-Consumption Scheme (SELCO)
Who is Brookfield?
Founded in Canada, Brookfield is one of the world’s largest owners and operators of renewable and transition assets, managing a portfolio of more than 270 GW of operational and development capacity globally.
This collaboration marks Brookfield’s first-ever investment in Malaysia, made through its Catalytic Transition Fund — a vehicle dedicated to accelerating decarbonisation in emerging markets worldwide.
Why Malaysia?
Brookfield chose Malaysia due to its position as one of Southeast Asia’s most attractive renewable energy markets, thanks to:
- Robust demand fundamentals – driven by utilities, corporates, and energy-intensive industries.
- Supportive policy frameworks – aligned with the government’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). (Click here to read our previous posts on NETR)
- Rising corporate demand – especially from data centres and semiconductor manufacturing, where green energy is becoming essential.
What Does Solarvest Brings to the Table?
Solarvest, a Bursa-listed clean energy specialist, has already developed over 2.3 GW of solar PV projects in Malaysia, ranging from rooftop solar to large-scale plants.
With its proven track record, Solarvest contributes:
- Local development expertise
- Strong execution capabilities
- Alignment with national energy transition targets
Our Thought 😎ðŸ’
This partnership isn’t just another corporate deal — it’s a vote of confidence in Malaysia’s clean energy future. With Brookfield’s global clout and Solarvest’s local expertise, the collaboration could redefine Malaysia’s renewable energy landscape and create long-term value for the economy, environment, and communities.
The rising demand from corporates, hyperscalers, and manufacturers only underscores the urgency. If executed well, this venture could make Malaysia a model for energy transition in the region.
