As technology continues to advance at breakneck speed, many traditional jobs are facing serious survival challenges. 💢💢💢 According to an analysis by U.S. personal finance platform GOBankingRates, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation could cause 7 major job categories to shrink significantly — or even disappear — by 2030.
These changes are expected to affect multiple industries, including retail, finance, travel, logistics, and transportation.
The report draws parallels with jobs that vanished during past technological revolutions — such as milk delivery workers and elevator operators — highlighting that the current wave of automation is unfolding faster and at a much larger scale.
Below are the 7 jobs most at risk of being replaced by 2030: 👀💢
1. Cashiers
Self-checkout systems are already common in supermarkets and retail stores. Looking ahead, smart shopping cart technology may allow customers to scan and pay for items automatically as they shop, further reducing the need for human cashiers — especially in large retail chains. (In Malaysia, you can witnessed this in Lotus's, JayaGrocer...) 😐🛍🛒

2. Bank Tellers
With the rise of online banking and digital banks, physical bank branches are steadily shrinking. To cut operating costs, financial institutions are expected to rely far less on traditional bank tellers in the future. (Question: When is your last time you walked into a bank physically?) 🏦🧍
3. Travel Agents
Online booking platforms, combined with AI tools such as ChatGPT that can generate personalised travel itineraries, have empowered consumers to plan trips on their own. As a result, the role of traditional travel agents continues to diminish.
4. Call Centre Customer Service Officers
AI-powered chatbots can now handle most basic customer enquiries, while voice interaction technology has become increasingly natural and responsive. These systems operate 24/7, follow predefined workflows, and are capable of resolving common issues without human intervention — gradually replacing live customer service agents.
5. Taxi Drivers
After being disrupted by ride-hailing platforms, taxi drivers may face an even bigger threat from autonomous vehicles. Self-driving cars can operate around the clock and have significantly lower long-term operating costs compared to human-driven vehicles.
6. Warehouse Pickers and Packers
Major companies like Amazon and Walmart (in Asia, they are Shopee, Lazada, Alibaba...) are investing heavily in warehouse robotics. While human oversight will still be needed, repetitive tasks such as picking, sorting, and transporting goods are increasingly being handled by robots that are faster, more efficient, and less prone to error.
7. Data Entry Clerks
AI systems can process, interpret, and organise data at speeds far exceeding human capability — while also reducing error rates. As these technologies mature, roles focused solely on manual data entry are expected to disappear.

Turning Career Risk into Opportunity
In response to these disruptions, the report urges workers to proactively upskill and explore diversified income streams. Rather than fearing job loss, individuals are encouraged to learn how to work with AI tools, using technology to enhance productivity and upgrade their careers.
In the age of automation, the key question is no longer “Will AI replace jobs?” It is “How can workers evolve faster than technology?”
Those who adapt early will not just survive the transition — they will lead it.
