5 Reasons why Malaysia will be Benefited from China's Reopening

After nearly three years, China will reopen its borders to international travellers and allow its citizens to travel abroad starting 8 January 2023.

The loosening measures also include the abandonment of quarantine upon arrival in the country. Travellers visiting China will be required to take a COVID-19 test 48 hours before departure and may enter the country with a negative result, according to Reuters.

After the announcement was made, Chinese nationals searched online for their top travel destinations, and here are the TOP 10 most searched international locations according to trip.com group:
  1. Japan
  2. Thailand
  3. South Korea
  4. USA
  5. Singapore
  6. Malaysia 😍
  7. Australia
  8. UK
  9. Macao
  10. Hong Kong
Find out the top 5 reasons why and how Malaysia will be benefited from China's reopening below...

Reason #1:
Chinese visitors favour Malaysia as a value-for-money holiday destination

Like many other Asian countries, Malaysian tourism benefitted greatly from the rise of the Chinese tourist before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. By 2019, Chinese visitors to Malaysia hit a record 3.1m and accounted for 12% of total visitor arrivals to Malaysia.

Reason #2:
Chinese visitors were very big spenders 😍

By 2019, total receipts from Chinese visitors to Malaysia hit an eye-watering MYR15.3 billion, and average receipt per Chinese visitor to Malaysia nearly hit MYR5,000.

Reason #3:
Chinese visitors mainly 'fly' here 🛬

Surprisingly, Kota Kinabalu International Airport commanded a good fair bit of share also. They love Sabah's trip!

Reason #4:
Chinese visitors outspent others on everything 🛍

Pahang is the third most visited state in Malaysia? Why? Answer: Genting Highlands lahhh...

Reason #5:
Chinese prefer Malaysian airlines (MAS & AirAsia) 🛪🛪

For those Chinese visitors to Malaysia who arrived by air, >60% of them had sat on a Malaysian airline in 2019.

Could Capital A (formerly known as AirAsia) and AirAsia X be able to recapture their Chinese market share and out PN17 soon?
