This girl decided to move her 'kitchen' from U.S. back to Malaysia!

The first question you probably have is, what on Earth is a micro cloud kitchen? Most know what cloud kitchens are. Essentially, these are commercial kitchens optimized for cost and delivery.

In fact, cloud kitchens have been gaining popularity because of this pandemic. Hawkr's micro cloud kitchens take the cloud kitchen concept one step further. Instead of operating in commercial kitchens, they recruit home cooks who run their own businesses from their home kitchen!

Hawkr's goal is to reduce the cost and barriers for anyone to operate their very own F&B business, all from the comfort of their home kitchens.

The Story starts here...

Hawkr is a food delivery platform pioneering micro cloud kitchen a.k.a. home kitchens.

The idea came about because of Covid-19. Upon graduating from the University of California, San Diego. Li Yen knew entrepreneurship was something she had always aspired to do. So, she left the sunny San Diego for every entrepreneur's promised land, Silicon Valley. That was where Hawkr was born. However, if you've been keeping up with US news, things have been pretty tumultuous over there. That was when she decided to move this startup back to her home country, Malaysia late last year.

However, that was only half the reason. The other half is this...

It is no surprise that Malaysia is a food paradise; that is a result of our food scene developing and thriving over many decades. It is undeniable that the pioneers of our food landscape are hawkers and street vendors themselves.

With very little capital, the earliest form of foodpreneurs have paved the way for our rich food landscape today. She and team started Hawkr because they believe the best cooks and foodpreneurs are not those with the fanciest kitchens or fanciest culinary degrees, but those that cook with passion.

And what better way to find people who cook with passion than in Malaysia?

As of today, Hawkr have about 50 micro cloud kitchens scattered all over the Klang Valley region and the company is currently developing their mobile app to make it easier for customers to place orders. About 20 of their micro cloud kitchens are run by completely new business owners who have never done anything like this in their lives. The remaining 30 are either former restaurant owners or have obtained a culinary degree and are looking for a platform to test their skills with as little cost and risk as possible.

Coming to Penang soon...

Hawkr is looking to expand to other parts of Malaysia, such as Penang (Li Yen's home state) at the end of this year. Moving back home to connect with fellow Malaysians in these challenging times has been a humbling experience thus far. She hope everyone can join Hawkr to build the largest network of home cooks.
